Tips on using Xcelsius 2008 for building dashboards
by Deepti Singh
Designing an effective dashboard is an art and irrespective of the technology used for building the dashboard there are certain rules of thumb which should not be ignored.
Rule 1 – Understand the audience for the dashboard because that will help determine how the dashboard is going to be used and the expected level of interaction.
Rule 2 - Understand the amount and depth of interaction that will be necessary within the dashboard and make recommendations accordingly to the business.
Rule 3 – Always do an analysis on the best technology that should be used to fulfill the business requirements. There still may be instances when your recommendation may differ from customer’s perception of best technology to use for building the dashboard. Especially in scenarios when the customer’s technological environment consists of multiple BI tools.

Fulfilling client requirements, not good enough
by Deepti Singh
I have participated over many years as a successful BI Consultant, but still the true nature of consulting seems elusive to me. Simply put, "Consulting" means providing expertise, advice or recommendations to someone else whose responsibility it is to act. Good consultants solve problems for their clients. Good consultants have some sort of expertise that their clients don't have.
Before going any further let me share a joke about consultants - A nuclear power plant was about to blow, so a consultant was called in. The consultant came in, punched a few buttons in the control room and the situation was fixed. When the consultant presented the client with a bill for $10,000, they said, "You were only there for 5 minutes and you're charging $10,000? That's outrageous!" To which the consultant replied, "The 5 minutes of my time only cost $5. Knowing which buttons to push to avoid disaster costs $9,995."

Process Optimization and a "Hidden stakeholder"..?
by Deepti Singh
As Business Intelligence consultants we always aim to help clients overcome the operational inefficiencies, find gaps in their current processes, enable cost curtailment and better decision making. My last business intelligence implementation was for a leading pharmaceutical company in the US. The biggest challenge pharmaceutical companies face today is to reduce the cycle time involved to bring a new drug into the market. Before a drug reaches the consumer it must go through the following phases:
Discovery > Clinical Trials > Approval > Manufacturing > Marketing
