SharePoint Branding: Is the Publishing Feature required for creating custom master pages and style sheets?
When I initially started down the rocky road to learning SharePoint branding, it began with SharePoint 2007. Back then the branding experience, from a designers perspective, was seriously lacking. SharePoint Designer 2007, albeit a forerunner for FrontPage, was somewhat helpful as I embarked on my journey. My first SharePoint branding project was an intranet for a client, and the firm I was working for at the time, gave me free reign on the overall design and layout of the site. When I conducted my research into how to change the look and feel of the site, I felt that customizing an out-of-the-box theme was too limiting. Sure I could have gone into the hive and copied an existing theme folder, and then customized it. However, this strategy didn't meet my requirements. I wanted more control over the design of the master page and page layout. In other words, I wanted to have this site not look like SharePoint at all.

SharePoint 2010 New Features
So what's new in SharePoint 2010 anyway? Microsoft has a library of documentation on this topic, but I thought to pull out the obvious winners. So here is my refined list of new features in SharePoint 2010 that did not exist in 2007. My list will focus on sites, communities, content, search, insights, composites, and office 2010 integration.
Sites:
Line-Of-Business Integration with read/write capabilities.
Enterprise Management Operations offers Web Analytics that provides you with traffic reports, search reports, and inventory reports.
Mobile Connectivity in SharePoint 2010 makes it easy to work on the go with full-fidelity viewing and providing editing capabilities.
A more robust user experience with the aid of the contextual Ribbon and Microsoft Silverlight.
Office Web Applications allow you to view and edit Office documents directly in the browser.

SharePoint 2010 Branding
Last Saturday I presented on SharePoint 2010 Branding at Richmond Code Camp. Since I went to the trouble of putting together a slide deck and a demo, I thought I would go ahead and share it on our blogs. The objective is to simply share my experiences with branding a publishing site template in SharePoint 2010. Hopefully you'll learn something from my post, and benefit from my explorations into making SharePoint look... well, less like SharePoint. ;)
I'll attach my slide deck for your reference, so feel free to download and read later. I'll not go into any of the slides, but instead jump right into my demo.
