Using Operational Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) Outside of Manufacturing
by Doug Casteen
Operational Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) is a Lean Manufacturing concept that is generally found in discrete manufacturing facilities. However, the philosophy can be used in many other business sectors such as Call Centers and Information Technology. In many continuous improvement initiatives, it becomes difficult for Process Engineers to measure the gains of their improvement efforts. OEE is a powerful benchmark to provide rapid feedback on a given system or process. Companies that currently operate Six Sigma programs use data to identify areas of improvement and also monitor the modifications made. OEE enables the Process engineer to perform these measurements.
An ideal process, equipment or system that has been implemented would operate:
100% of the time, at 100% capacity, and with an output of 100% good quality.

by Doug Casteen
When I arrived in Virginia recently to continue my career in in business process improvement and management consulting, I was looking for a network of organizations and individuals with similar interests and backgrounds that support my professional interests. I was invited by a colleague to attend a company presentation and site visit hosted by VBEC. Once there, I realized that I was surrounded by individuals from various companies from all over Virginia that had the same passion for implementation of business improvement processes, such as Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, and ISO. VBEC welcomed me as a guest to a few of their site presentations and I have been impressed with the quality and depth of the presentations given by company representatives on how they implemented key improvement methodologies.

by Doug Casteen
Project Managers, Continuous Improvement Champions, and Quality Professionals have a wide variety of tools and references on the internet today that can be applied their specific improvement initiatives. What becomes overwhelming for these managers in searching for the right tools or techniques is where they should start their initial search. Entering into a search engine a specific tool or technique only to have a multitude of resources returned may sometimes create significant frustration for the manager. When these managers finally acquire the needed results from an online resource, they generally will book mark them for future reference to save time on subsequent searches. Having been through this exercise myself numerous times in my career, I have compiled a list of online references that have been most beneficial in supporting my past quality initiatives, continuous improvement endeavors and overall management of projects.

by Doug Casteen
Stephen Sondheim’s lyrics to “Putting it Together” could have been applied to creating art as well as a Six Sigma project. “Bit by bit, part by part, sheet by sheet, chart by chart.”

Understanding the Benefits of 5S
by Doug Casteen
Have you ever walked into a place of business and been affected negatively by the lack of cleanliness and disorganization? It doesn’t matter if that company or organization has the most competitive prices and selection of goods, if the environment is in disarray then the customer may decide not to do business with that company. Likewise, have you ever been in a high end grocery store, Five Star hotel, or a corporate headquarters where the environment was so clean and orderly that it instantly made a positive impression on you about the culture of that organization. Those environments were not established by chance. These organizations more than likely adopted a 5S Visual Management program or similar effort to reinforce their culture or brand.
