Part 2: Code Set Translations: Crosswalks – Are they problem solvers or problem generators? Dealing with ICD10.
In a recent article I discussed how the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) are mandating the use of the International Classification of Disease’s code set upgrade from the current ICD9 version to the ICD10 version. Here are some key elements of achieving success in the ICD10 project:
1) First and foremost, there should be a significant amount of time where there is parallel processing of using both ICD9 versus ICD10. By maintaining an implementation timeline of Oct 1 2013, processing in parallel for a year should not be considered a long extended project warranty phase, but time for direct comparison.

Code Set Translations: Crosswalks – Are they problem solvers or problem generators?
Within the health care industry, the ICD10 project lingers as the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has just set the October 2014 deadline for implementation. The International Classifications of Disease (ICD) codes are part of a large code set used within the health care industry to designate the symptoms or condition of the patient. Currently, everyone is using version 9, and CMS is mandating the use of version 10. When it comes to an upgrade, this is far from simple. One of the larger challenges within the ICD10 project is that it seeks to “crosswalk” the two different ICD code sets. A crosswalk can essentially be thought of as a translation from one code set to another. (See these links for an explanation of the ICD codes and the difference between ICD9 and ICD10.)

The Missing Health Care Mobile App
When I think of the boom in Healthcare IT, I am reminded of the multitude of systems which allow providers to communicate to other providers, patients, and insurance companies to facilitate the care of the patient and management of health services. I know there are several websites available to communicate with the patient or member community, yet, the mobile applications are generally lacking. While there is an app for your health and fitness, there aren’t many apps for the patient which insurance companies or health care providers are supplying.

Why is Agile/Scrum compared to Rugby?
Dear Bob Lambert, my esteemed friend and colleague, I read your article regarding your opinion that rugby is not a good analogy for agile software development. I respectfully disagree. Like you, I’m also a fan and former player. (Go James River Women!!). As a certified Scrum Master, I strongly believe that Agile is a great way to deliver software. In fact, so does Billy Tilson, another CapTech Rugger. Here’s my take on why our favorite sport is a great analogy for Agile:

How do you staff a Health Care IT Project without enough health care qualified resources?
Most project managers have experienced projects with too few resources or a staff with insufficient skillsets. Specifically within the health care industry, the skillsets are in short supply due to the complex nature of health care; the ideal business analyst may be a nurse with an IT background. There is a sundry of knowledge, code sets, processes, jargon, and vendor systems that can differentiate one resource from another. How do you overcome all of that and find the ideal candidate that can hit the ground running? Developing a creative resourcing approach is usually a part of any project manager's role when resources are scarce.
1) Hire resources with a very strong IT background who will build their own knowledge about your environment and health care. Any health care background may be acceptable, even though it isn’t directly within the same area.
