Leveraging SharePoint 2007 for Program Management

Recently, CapTech was asked to support the program management office (PMO) for a leading mortgage sourcing and servicing provider. The client was embarking on a multi-year (and $MM) program and needed a qualified group of resources to manage and track the overall program delivery. Our initial responsibilities were to determine the PMO guidelines and, specifically, which tool would offer a collaborative platform between our team and the major stakeholders, such as the project managers (PMs).

Our team ultimately settled on SharePoint 2007 for a number of reasons. Known mostly as a document management platform, this tool can be leveraged to document information through its variety of features such as lists and team sites.

Build a writing culture in application development

One of the key skills needed in today’s IT shop is communication, and one of the best ways to improve ability to communicate is to write blog posts and articles.

In spite of “IT guy” stereotypes, communication and analytical thinking about business are among the most important skills in application development. Developers, analysts, and managers require ability to interact effectively with business people, to conceptualize solutions that match business needs, critically evaluate those solutions, and effectively make the case for one of them. Of course this is true of the overall project business case, but more importantly it applies to the daily “IT guy” to business person conversations that happen throughout analysis, design, development, and testing.

Cultivating writing skills is one way to cultivate effective communication. Often, writers start a piece with “it all worked out in their head”.

The Four-Step Program To Successful Business Process Modeling

One of the most important tasks of any process engineering project is business process modeling.  Documenting the business process involves analyzing how the work is currently performed.  It focuses on the roles and responsibilities in the current process and identifies handoffs of work from one role to another.

The purpose of documenting the business process is to identify and capture any problems in the current process such as bottlenecks, workarounds, redundancy, and other labor-intensive tasks.  It also allows you to identify opportunities to improve the process through automation and assess the impact of a new technology implementation.  It can also provide a starting point for the detailed analysis and design activities.
